            When you think of romantic places there is no place on earth as romantic as The Taj Mahal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered by many to be the finest example of Mughal architecture. Located in Agra, India the Taj Mahal was built between 1632 and 1653 by thousands of craftsmen and artisans. Here calligraphers, stone carvers and many others worked tirelessly to create the magnificent artworks that decorate the interior of the building. The Taj is considered to be the world’s finest symbol of a man’s love for his wife.

            In 1631, Mumtaz Mahal, the third wife of Shah Jahan died during the birth of their fourteenth child. The Shah was beside himself with grief. He vowed to build a lasting monument to his beloved wife. He labored with the architects and designers to create the most beautiful building in the world. In the Shah’s words:

Should guilty seek asylum here,
Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin.
Should a sinner make his way to this mansion,
All his past sins are to be washed away.
The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs;
And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes.
In this world this edifice has been made;
To display thereby the creator's glory.
