Chinese New Year in San Francisco's Chinatown ! |
||
San Francisco, California has the largest Chinatown (outside of China itself) in the world. Starting in the mid 1800’s the 5,000 year old traditions of the Lantern Festival, along with a fantastic parade, have been the focal point of the Chinese New Years celebration in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The tradition was begun in part as a way of introducing Chinese culture to the San Francisco community. You’ll see floats, the newly crowned Miss Chinatown USA, lanterns and, of course, dragons! Watch for the Golden Dragon which is controlled by over 100 men and women who are trained in the martial arts. Fireworks are a big part of the celebration as they are used to scare away the evil spirit Shan-Sau. This parade draws the most TV viewers of any in the world. This is the largest celebration of Chinese New Year outside of China.
